Learning to Play Basic Poker

Learning to play basic poker is the first step toward becoming one of the master players of the game. Take the easy lessons first and build a solid foundation for your poker skills.

Poker is a game of four to ten players using a standard pack of playing cards. The dealer can be one of the players themselves. In poker, card dealing is done in a clockwise manner.

Poker betting is based on each player's idea of who has the supreme poker hand in the game. All the players' bets are saved in the pot.

Poker hands and rankings are standardized and recognized by all poker variants as the following:

1. straight flush, containing five correctly sequenced cards of alike suits, where an Ace - whenever used - can either be the highest or the lowest card; 2. four of a kind, containing four cards of parallel rank and one supplementary card; 3. full house, containing three cards of parallel rank and another two cards of parallel rank; 4. flush, containing five cards of alike suits; 5. straight, containing five correctly sequenced cards of any suit assortment; 6. three of a kind, containing three cards of parallel rank and two supplementary cards; 7. two pair, containing two sets of two cards with parallel rank and a supplementary card; 8. one pair, containing two cards of parallel rank and three supplementary cards; and 9. high card or the card with the best possible value in a varied hand.

When players have the same hand, the higher rank is awarded to the one with the highest card in the principal part of the combination.

Within the poker game, players are required to call, raise or fold. When a player calls, the player makes a bet matching the value of the bet made by the previous player. When a player raises the stakes, the player makes a bet higher than the value of the bet made by the previous player. When a player folds, the player makes no bet and surrenders claims to all previous bets placed. The player who folds is out of the game.

Poker players want other players to fold and encourage this by bluffing. A bluff means making opponents fear that the player holds a much higher hand that is sure to win. This could drive the other players to fold prematurely.

After all players have taken their turn and have made their choices, the round is ended. Any remaining players are called to a show of hands or showdown. The upturned hands reveal the winner.

If a single player is left in the game, no showdown is called. The enduring player wins the game, whether by virtue of actually having the highest hand or by very skillfull bluffing.
