A Background of Community Card Poker

Community Card poker games are considered relatively modern poker games since they came into existence shortly before the break out of the Second World War. Community Card poker games are unique from draw poker games or stud poker games because each poker player, in a community card poker, is dealt with an incomplete hand. This incomplete hand is usually two cards and these cards are called personal cards. And these personal cards are combined with the face up cards placed at the center of the table to form a complete hand.

The face-up cards at the center of the poker table are shared by all the poker players. Thus, these cards are called "community cards", hence the name of the poker variant. But these shared cards are also known as "widow cards". And this may have helped its appeal during the war era. The whole set of community is called the "board". Depending on the variant of community card poker, the cards on the board may be arranged in a simple straight line or in a particular pattern.

There are several variants of the community card poker and the most popular of these is known as the Texas Hold'em. Other community card poker games are Pineapple, Crazy Pineapple, Tahoe, Omaha, and Manila. There are also various home games for community card poker.

For the community card poker home games, the forced bets usually used are antes while in casinos and card rooms, the poker players always utilize blinds. Another key difference between home games and casino games is the betting structure. In home games, the betting structure typically used is the spread limit. While in casinos, the popular betting structure is the fixed limit. The no limit and pot limit betting structures are infrequently played but some players claim that community card poker games are great for such betting structures.

In terms of betting, community card poker games have a similarity with stud poker games. That is, both types of poker games have set the earlier betting rounds to have lower limits than the later betting rounds. Usually, the later betting rounds have limits which are twice that of the earlier rounds.

While stud poker games and draw poker games are often played using the lowball variants, the community card poker games are rarely played in such type of variant. Still, some poker players are able to play community card poker at high-low split using the Ace-to-five as low values. Such a set-up can allow a poker player to win both the best high and the best low. But usually, there is a qualifying hand for the low hand.
